Local electrician exceeding economic expections

In a time when most companies are downsizing,Nephi’s Electric, an electrical company based in Salem, continues to grow. "We refuse to participate in the recession," said Nephi Gibson, owner of the company.

Gibson started the company out of his home five years ago with one journeyman and two apprentices working part-time on nights and weekends. Within the last year, however, the company has grown to need 16 workers with four trucks and a trailer, and is considering expansion into a commercial location.

The secret of the company’s success? Service. "Our company continues to grow in a time of recession because of the relationships we have with our customers," Gibson said. "The customer always comes first." In addition to the company motto, "exceeding your expectations," Gibson has developed a threefold mission for his business to ensure it always puts the customer first and continually builds good relationships. He said a Nephi’s Electric customer can Nephi’s Electric always expect three things: the electricians will be on time, they will honor their price quotes and they will be clean.

"We understand that men and women are taking time out of their day to be home when we say we’re going to be there, so we’re going to be there on time," he said. Gibson said his workers are always clean cut, have clean language and don’t take smoking breaks. His goal is to have a company that is easy to work with and leaves a good impression that reflects the company’s name. Workers clean up after themselves, so clients don’t have to. In addition to the company’s three guarantees, it offers 24-hour service and continues to put money and time back into the community, through local high schools and sports programs. Nephi’s Electric sponsored Sugar- Salem High School’s 2008 homecoming, along with youth and men’s recreation softball teams this summer. It is donating T-shirts for Sugar-Salem’s football camp as well. In addition to sponsorship, Gibson gives his time as a coach for the Grid Kid football program and will be the freshman footbal coach at Sugar-Salem High School this year. The son of an electrician, Gibson attributes much of his success to his father. Although Gibson didn’t always want to be an electrician, his father taught him the basics of electrical work and a good work ethic.

Later, when life led him back to electrical work, Gibson already had a foundation. After that, he had two other mentors, Steve Price and Doug McKay, who taught him the technical skills and customer service he needed to be successful. "Those three guys made me who I am today," Gibson said. "Without them, there’s no way I’d be here." They taught him to do any type of electrical work imaginable. Nephi’s Electric does commercial, industrial and residential work. "Anything electrical you can think of, we do it," Gibson said. "From aousewife saying the lights in her kitchen don’t work to $4-5 million homes in Jackson Hole, we do it, and we want people to be happier than they ever thought they’d be when we’re done."
